  • Powered Spherical Wave Multi-Tweeter System

    Pursuing a borderless sound which eliminates the boundary between live music and recorded music, DIASOUL made a discovery.
    A clue to this borderless sound which eliminates the boundary between live music and recorded music was hidden within the apparent contradiction between an omni-directional wave front and a powerful, dynamic sound. A new concept was born called the “Powered Spherical Wave”. Its goal is to reconcile the elements of acoustic space (soundstage) and energy at the same time.

    It is necessary for a speaker to possess both the elements of acoustic space and energy. For example, even if two speakers have exactly the same frequency response, the sound of a bass drum will sound different when reproduced by a large diameter speaker and a small diameter speaker. This is due to the small diameter speaker radiating less musical energy. In other words it is necessary to increase the surface area of the diaphragm as in a line array to increase the energy.

    On the other hand a wave form similar to a point source is necessary for a soundstage with the ideal expansive sound.
    Even just two speakers can reproduce a three dimensional acoustic space (soundstage) from this sense of depth, height and width. However, the surface area of a point source speaker diaphragm is very small, and consequently the amount of musical energy it can radiate is quite small.

    How is it when one listens to a live instrument? A live instrument has a certain amount of resonant surface area and material. Then, the sound wave will travel 360 degrees in all directions. In other words a live instrument fulfills both elements of soundstage and energy.

    If we use a real life example such as a 2-way speaker, the woofer is a large diameter unit and the tweeter is a small diameter unit. Both the tweeter and the woofer operate at frequencies slightly above or below the crossover frequency and relatively close in frequency, but their behavior is completely different. Even if both units were to measure the same sound pressure level according to the frequency response, the sound energy will be quite different. In other words in the region of the crossover frequency there will be a large sound energy frequency response step.

    To realize this powered spherical wave, we developed a powered spherical multi-tweeter. (Patent pending). After various experiments and repeated thorough listening tests, we settled on a special arrangement of (4) 32mm diameter direct radiating tweeters on the surface of a sphere. In order to achieve the most favorable characteristics we made use of individual, simple direct radiating tweeters.

    The tweeters’ location, the size and orientation of the spherical cabinet and their location relative to the woofer share a miraculous relationship which can only be correctly described as pinpoint. The moment this balance is perfect and the wave front is correct suddenly the feeling of a live performance appears before one’s eyes. Correctly speaking one has the sensation that the live performers are actually there.

    In addition to the beautiful, expansive soundstage of an omni-directional, by increasing the total surface area of the high frequency drivers like a line source we have also increased the musical energy to a remarkable degree. By reducing the relative difference in surface area between the tweeter and woofer, in the frequency range near the crossover point we have moved closer to the musical energy frequency response and by having a natural energy characteristic, we have greatly advanced toward a live sound. The sound propagation despite being a direct radiator is more similar to the compression driver of a horn speaker.

  • Pure Boron Tweeter

    The diaphragm has the greatest impact on the sound quality of a speaker unit. The ideal diaphragm material must satisfy both elements of high propagation velocity and moderate internal loss at the same time. B4C (boron carbide) at a propagation velocity of 12700m/sec is faster than boron and second only to diamond, yet it possesses an internal loss similar to paper making it the ideal material for a diaphragm. As for lightness it even surpasses aluminum.

    Each individual tweeter unit consists of a boron dome and cone which are implemented in a mechanically coupled 2 way construction and as a simple direct radiator it is a single unit. In the audible hearing range above 1.8KHz there is absolutely no break-up and behaves as a perfect piston. This pure boron carbide tweeter is procured from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

    To achieve the powered spherical wave we arranged (4) pure boron tweeter units in a multi-tweeter system and so that each individual tweeter unit behaves as a perfect piston throughout the audible range, the wave front created by the (4) tweeters also had to be perfectly matched regarding the tweeter’s entire range of operation. The result is a natural soundstage.
    On the other hand boron carbide’s sound excels in resolution, information and transients, but because it possesses a moderate internal loss it does not produce unnecessary resonance. It reproduces an extremely natural tonal balance.

  • Spherical cabinet

    The cabinet of the Powered Spherical Wave Multi-Tweeter System is composed of two layers, an outer layer of Siberian Birch and a heavy inner layer that has been machined from steel. By coupling the four tweeters to the heavy steel inner layer with only metal parts, the tweeters are completely mechanically grounded. This allows the four tweeters to move in perfect harmony, and thoroughly prevents tweeter vibrations from causing distortion to the wave front.

    Also, the spherical shaped cabinet is equipped with a steel stand permitting adjustment of both the height and listening angle and allows for the possibility of optimizing the wave front with fine adjustments.

    Moreover, the tweeter unit composed of the spherical cabinet and its steel stand is in a free floating construction which allows for freedom of movement in the horizontal plane in relation to the lower cabinets containing the mid-range driver unit and the woofer units. Thanks to this the influence of oscillations from the mid-range and woofer units is greatly reduced, and the soundstage is dramatically improved.

  • Woofer and Sub Woofer

    The mid-range unit and woofer units employ NCV (Nano Carbonized high Velocity) diaphragms which are injection molded nano-carbon tubes and multiple resins. The NCV mid-range and woofer units achieve a propagation velocity of 5600m/sec surpassing titanium (5100m/sec) and rival the moderate internal loss of paper.

    Both the mid-range driver and the subwoofers’ cabinet utilize a trapezoidal construction which eliminates standing waves inside the cabinet. Moreover, the mid-range unit’s cabinet is separated from the low frequency woofers’ cabinet in an independent isolation construction. By developing a cabinet form which floats in the air rejecting the transmission of vibrations and distortion between the mid-range driver and the low frequency woofers, the realism of the soundstage has been further enhanced.

    Each low frequency woofer carries an extremely strong 17,000 Gauss magnet. They also incorporate MST (Magnetic Servo Technology) which performs as an electromagnetic brake comparable to MFB (Motional Feedback) and results in an extremely high speed, yet weighty bass. Moreover, the (2) low frequency woofers are mechanically coupled in an opposing orientation for reaction canceling, and we have succeeded in reducing the mechanical vibrations emitted from the woofers to a great extent. Meanwhile the air behind each woofer is divided into its own independent speaker box and we have successfully reduced the interference between the two woofers.

  • Woofer for network

    The network for the mid-range unit and low frequency woofers utilizes Finemet electromagnetic materials which surpass even amorphous materials and are the best material in existence. The sound is extremely stress free and moreover delivers an unrivaled sound with low noise.

  • Speaker of the internal wiring for cable

    The speaker’s internal cabling has as great an effect on the sound quality as the actual speaker cable itself. As a result of thorough listening tests and based upon the resolution and the sense of musical reality, we selected Chord’s high grade cabling.

  • Speaker spike

    We utilize Andante Largo’s through hole spikes to raise the sound quality to the highest level because they are the most rigid and superior for adjusting height.

The DIASOUL speaker system consists of the DIASOULmark_01i speaker and the NW1 network controller.
The tweeter & mid-range section and the low frequency woofer section are independently driven by their own amplifiers in a multi-amp system. The NW1 network controller divides the frequency range between the tweeter/mid-range section and the low frequency woofer section, and it makes corrections for ideal frequency response within their respective ranges. Thanks to the NW1 it is possible to extract the very best sound quality.

Characteristics of the Network Controller NW1

  • The mid-range & tweeter section is equipped with (4) modes of high-pass and low pass filters for frequency response correction, and one can match the listening room’s characteristics for optimum in room frequency response.

  • The cut off frequency of the cut off filter, the Q factor and the gain can be freely set allowing both the weight of the low frequency range and the tonal balance to be tailored to the listening room.

  • Two types of input connectors are offered (XLR and RCA), and in addition the unused input type is completely separated including the ground, so that noise is thoroughly prevented from entering via the ground line.

  • The cores of the line transformers utilized at the mid-range and low frequency inputs and outputs are constructed of Finemet which is the most ideal magnetic material. Also, due to this ground isolation is possible, and effects transmission noise generated between the preamp & NW1, and NW1 & the power amplifiers can be reduced by the same level whether using the balanced or unbalanced connections.

  • The unit is equipped with a switch to select between absolute polarity & reverse polarity, and the optimal polarity for a given recording can be chosen.
